Both are journals; only one is about how you feel#
Waffle is a shared notebook. You create a journal, invite people, and write entries in it together, with a daily “waffle of the day” prompt if you need a nudge. You can run one journal with your partner, another with your parents, and a third with a group chat, which no couples-specific app does. It is closer to a private group blog than to a relationship app.
BeSeen is a mood journal for two. The entry is a check-in: a mood on a five-point scale, emotion tags, a body map, and optionally a note, photo, or voice memo. You choose what your partner sees, per entry, and their latest shared mood sits on your home screen. Over weeks you get trends and a weekly recap of how you each actually felt, which free-form writing cannot give you.
If what you want is to write together, Waffle does that better. If what you want is to understand each other, BeSeen is built for exactly that.
Price and what the free tier covers#
Waffle’s free tier is unusually generous for text: unlimited journals, members, and text entries; all photos, video, and voice are paid. The catch is media. Every photo, video, and voice memo needs Waffle Plus, listed at $14.99/mo, or $39.99 to $199.99/yr as of September 2026, and a couple that journals with photos will hit that wall in the first week.
BeSeen’s solo mood journal is free with no account. BeSeen+ unlocks partner features for both of you at $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year after a 7-day trial.
Privacy: read Waffle’s policy, not its FAQ#
Waffle’s FAQ says it never sells your data. Its privacy policy, last updated March 2023 as of our September 2026 check, says it may sell identifiers and that third-party AI providers may receive details about your entries. Those two statements do not agree, and the policy is the one that counts. For a diary that is a real concern.
BeSeen keeps the journal on your device and shares nothing until you connect with a partner. What you share, including notes, feelings, activities, replies, and prompt answers, is end-to-end encrypted between your two phones. Mood level and timestamps use standard encryption rather than end-to-end; we would rather say that than round up. No ads, no data selling, no model training on your content. Full detail on the privacy page.
Where Waffle wins#
Android, and a many-people model. If you want a journal with your family or a group of friends, Waffle is the only app on our list that does it, and it does it well. Video entries are also a real strength; BeSeen has photos and voice, not video. And if you are a couple that likes writing long entries to each other rather than logging how a day felt, Waffle’s blank page is the better tool.
Where BeSeen wins#
Everything that makes it a couples app. Mood tracking with trends. Per entry sharing control. Home screen widgets that show your partner’s latest shared mood or note. Love notes that land on their lock screen. A shared drawing canvas, a relationship timeline, couple streaks, a Buzz to say you are thinking of them, and 140+ answer-to-reveal prompts. And a privacy design that a diary app should have had from the start.
Can you use both?#
Easily. Waffle for the family journal and the long letters, BeSeen for the daily check-in between the two of you. If you want one app and you mostly journal as a couple, our journal prompts for couples work in either.
Try the journal built for two.

Is Waffle free?
Waffle's free tier includes unlimited journals, members, and text entries. All photos, video, and voice need Waffle Plus, listed at $14.99 a month or $39.99 to $199.99 a year as of September 2026. BeSeen's solo mood journal is free with no account; BeSeen+ adds partner features after a 7-day trial.
Is Waffle private?
Read its privacy policy rather than its FAQ. As of September 2026 the policy says Waffle may sell identifiers and that third-party AI providers may receive details about your entries, which contradicts the FAQ's claim that it never sells your data. BeSeen keeps your journal on your device and end-to-end encrypts what you share.
Does BeSeen work with family or friends, like Waffle?
BeSeen connects you with one partner, and that partner can be anyone who cares how you are doing: a romantic partner, a close friend, or a family member. It does not do multiple journals with multiple groups. For that, Waffle is the better tool.
Does Waffle track your mood?
No. Waffle is a free-form journal with no mood scale, trends, or relationship features. BeSeen's entry is a mood check-in with emotion tags and a body map, so over time you get patterns and a weekly recap of how you each felt.
